Searching For Creative Brides (and Grooms)

. category: Inspiration
  • Generally the bride (let's not forget the groom!) searches for her perfect wedding photographer. Well this time it's the other way around. I am searching for the perfect couples. No wait, scratch that - I am searching for the most creative couples!

For those of you who don't know, I am originally from Chicago. The style of wedding photography (and even the style of wedding) I know and love has not yet broken into Ireland. I have been lucky, so far, with the weddings I photographed that the couples have let me be creative, but only to a certain extent. Weddings and wedding photography in Ireland is still slightly more traditional. I have yet to come across a cake that isn't white! I encourage couples to look outside Ireland for wedding ideas and inspiration.

You should choose a photographer because you like their style. Don't ask them to photograph in a way that is different to what you see. You will get better results when the photographer is happy to do what they love.

Your wedding is only one day. A lot of time and money goes into this big celebration and unfortunately, most often, the bride and groom spend a good part of the day taking posed photos with family and friends. Most anyone with a camera can take posed group photos (and probably will on your wedding day!) so why not let your photographer take photos that will actually document your day as it is. You should, however, get some fun portraits of the two of you! Unless you do a day after or trash the dress session you will most likely never wear your dress again.

Here is a few things to think about:

    • Let your photographer have complete creative freedom
    • Think outside the box. Don't let tradition tell you what has to be done at your wedding.
    • Do one group photo of everyone at the wedding instead of several small ones.
    • Do not worry that the bottom of your dress will get slightly dirty if you step in the grass. It's going to get dirty anyways!
    • Lastly, PLEASE STOP THINKING YOU LOOK BAD IN PHOTOS! You don't. You look smokin!

I've provided some inspiration from my own wedding. Maybe it will get some of those creative juices flowing! Most creative idea we had - wedding reception on the 95th floor overlooking the city. BE CREATIVE!

A lot of you might have the impression that photographers only photograph a small part of the day. Maybe that was true once but not anymore. You want to remember the entire day not a small part of it. You'll be glad the photographer stuck around when you see photos of Uncle Joe having a good time on the dance floor!
