Today I want to talk about the all the extra touches to your wedding day and how you can make them more environmentally friendly. The decor of your wedding is by far one of the most important things to think about. This will set the tone and create the overall style of your wedding. From the ribbon tied flowers at the ends of the church pews to the table settings at your reception. There are so many little details that come into play. Here are a few little tips in helping you make less of a negative impact on the environment and even help to set your wedding apart from all the others.

Let’s start with your ceremony. Nearly every ceremony is bound to have some sort of flower arrangement. But one of the easiest to to make a greener choice with is the flowers that adorn the ends of the aisles. First, there are so many great alternatives to using flowers. You could place a lantern at the end of every aisle to create a more dramatic ambiance. You can even find some vintage lanterns in your local antique shop. Mix and match them for a true eclectic feel. You can give them to your bridesmaids or family to take home as a nice memento. You can also find great paper alternatives to using flowers. Paper can be recycled unlike cut flowers. But if you really have your heart set on using flowers think of using some lovely potted flowers instead of cut flowers or have your flowers tied with earth friendly twine instead of plastic ribbon.

Your wedding flowers definitely count as part of your wedding decor. You can find my post on wedding flowers here, but I wanted to expand on the idea. Not only can you make a greener choice with the type of flowers you use but also by not using flowers at all. Ok this idea might seem a bit mad and you are probably reading this with a very confused and skeptical face but just look at these stunning alternatives to bouquets and boutonnieres. Nope not a single flower was used!

Some of the most elaborate wedding decor will be at your reception. Be sure to use table settings that won’t be thrown away. Use fabric napkins instead of paper napkins, create centrepieces that will be reused or that can be recycled instead of thrown away. At our wedding we had jars full of different sweets to add colour and fun to each table. The sweets could be eaten and the jars were taken home by guests. Gather used wine bottles and use them as candle holders. Use your wedding favours as table centrepieces. And don’t forget to print your dinner menus, placecards, seating charts or table numbers on recycled paper or paper that can be recycled. Metallic papers cannot be recycled!

Above all else, remember to enjoy your wedding planning.

I could blog all day about Gemma and Kevin’s wedding. But I think this time I will let the pictures speak for themselves. I just want to say that the combination of the glorious sun and a beautiful relaxed bride made for a great day. Gemma you really are gorgeous! A big thanks to your mum for feeding me homemade soup and brown bread when I should have been working. Gotta love Irish mums!

A few months back I posted photos of Arianna’s maternity session. On the 17th of December Vivienne was born. She arrived a bit earlier than expected which Arianna and Morne are thankful for as they were able to relax on Christmas. She is a beautiful little bundle. I had the pleasure of doing her first portrait session a couple weeks ago. Vivienne is not yet on a schedule. In fact she resists taking naps in case she misses out on anything and gets a bit grumpy if she is not being held. There was a lot of patience involved on that day but for a few minutes we managed to get her to sleep before she quickly woke to the sound of a clicking camera. Still, she is a doll! Congrats to Arianna and Morne for creating such a gorgeous little thing for me to photograph.

A few of my photos from our photowalk in Trim just over a week ago. As Christina said, when she posted her photos, it was a great day where we got to meet a good bunch of people and have a laugh. It was Baltic cold, but that’s a minor complaint.  The photos below are in the order they were taken on the day. First up is the view through the keyhole at Trim Castle. Happy I got it but happier with some of the other shots…

While we were visiting Dingle one weekend I had the pleasure of photographing my sister-in-law Orla. It was just for a bit of fun. There are so many great places to photograph in that part of the country. It was great to have a model that I knew, which made the whole shoot more relaxing. The great thing was that Orla was up for any idea that I had and wasn’t embarrassed to be seen doing any of the strange things I asked. We spent the day driving until we spotted somewhere on the side of the road and popped out of the car for a few snaps (having Colin as a chauffeur was great!). I’d love to do all my portrait sessions like that. Popping in and out of the car at various locations gives you a real buzz and makes the whole experience more enjoyable and funny enough more relaxing. I’ve been trying to encourage my brides and grooms to do the same thing when they have a long drive from the ceremony to the reception. I follow behind them in my car and if we see somewhere that would make a great shot we pull over for a few snaps. I’ve gotten some of my favourite shots that way. Anyways enough of my rambling and on to the photos.
